Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day 2013
Tuesday has arrived with Ben & Jerry's 35th annual Free Cone Day and ice cream fans everywhere are participating.
The Vermont-based ice cream makers are offering a complimentary cone to customers who visit Ben & Jerry's shops across the country from noon to 8 p.m. today.
Founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have held Free Cone Day since the company's first anniversary in 1979 at their Burlington, Vermont store. Despite the company having been acquired by Unilever, the tradition of celebration continues today.
It is estimated that over 1 million cones will be distributed on Free Cone Day, according to CNN.
Free Cone Day arrives just as temperatures start to rise, hailing the beginning of Spring. Ben & Jerry's is also celebrating three new Greek frozen yogurt flavors- Vanilla Caramel, Pineapple Passion Fruit and Liz Lemon- a flavor inspired by Tina Fey's character on the hit television series "30 Rock."
Ben & Jerry's is famous for their cleverly titled flavors, which have "always been about having some irreverence and having some fun," spokesperson Sean Greenwood told Time magazine.
Furthermore, Liz Lemon was not the company's first homage to a television character.
Past noteworthy flavors at Ben & Jerry's include "Holy Cannoli," named after Will Ferrell's "Saturday Night Live" skit. It featured vanilla pistachio ice cream, mascarpone cheese, and cannoli pieces.
"Pulp Addiction" intimated 1994's film "Pulp Fiction" and contained orange ice cream with orange flavored brandy liqueur.
Meanwhile, Twitter users are posting their celebrations of Free Cone Day on Tuesday.
"Not only is it a beautiful day but its FREE CONE DAY at Ben and Jerry's," wrote Emily.
"Its free cone day at ben & jerrys today it's a nice day for some ice cream," posted Miss P.
"Ben and Jerry's free cone day makes me a very happy girl," added Alice.
