Best Weight Loss Diets for 2017: Top 3 Diets in 2017 According to Nutrition Experts

Health-conscious dieters who plan to slim down this year can look at the annual list compiled by U.S. News and World Report, in which three diets have ranked head and shoulders above other eating plans, as assessed by a panel of diet and nutrition experts.

US News and World Report have just released their annual "Best Diets Rankings" in January of this year, in which a study group of dieticians and nutritionists have looked through and tested 38 diet plans to pick out the best diets to follow this 2017.

The list has been separated into categories, but for weight watchers looking to lose a few extra pounds before summer, the "Best Weight-Loss Diets" is the list to study. The top three, as determined by the experts, are the Volumetrics Diet and the Jenny Craig Diet tied at the number two spot, with the Weight Watchers Diet taking top place.

#2 The Jenny Craig Diet and Volumetrics Diet

The Jenny Craig Diet is a commercially marketed eating plan that aims for weight loss and maintenance. It tied with the Volumetrics Diet at number two in the "Best Weight-Loss Diets" category while it notched 10th place for "Best Diets Overall," which speaks of its focus on weight loss, especially in the short term.

The diet claims to have its followers lose up to two pounds a week, using prepackaged meals and recipes to restrict calories and fat. Personal consultants support and motivate dieters along the way.

Developed at the Penn State University by nutrition professor Barbara Rolls, Volumetrics Diet focuses on eating food that is more filling but less energy dense — more volume for the same calories, in other words. This diet ranked at number 8 in "Best Diets Overall."

#1 The Weight Watchers Diet

The Weight Watchers Diet is part of the "Beyond the Scale" program developed by the Weight Watchers International company, using metrics called "SmartPoints" and "FitPoints" to control the eating and exercise habits of its followers. The program claims a weight reduction of up to 2 pounds per week. A core part of the plan is a support group in which members who have lost weight motivate other members who are still progressing with their plan.

The "Weight Watchers Diet" ranked number 4 in "Best Diets Overall" in the U.S. News and World Report survey.
