Between Two Worlds
So he answered, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
- 2 Kings 6:16
We may envision heaven as being so distant, so far away. But the Bible never says heaven is distant. There is a supernatural world around us, and I think heaven is not as far away as we may think.
The Bible says, "The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (Psalm 34:7). Angels are actively doing the work of God in our lives.
We see this in the story of the prophet Elisha in 2 Kings 6. The enemy had surrounded the city where Elisha and his servant were. His servant saw the great military force and started to panic. But Elisha said, "Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them" (verse 16). Then Elisha prayed, "Open his eyes that he may see" (verse 17).
Suddenly Elisha's servant looked up and saw the mountain "full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha" (verse 17). That servant saw the unseen angelic armies of God. Can you imagine if God gave us just a glimpse of the other side? How it would change the way we think! It would change our priorities. It would help us look at our problems in a new way.
A woman who had a severely handicapped child once told me, "His life has placed one of my feet in heaven and one on this earth."
When a crisis happens in your life, it opens your eyes to the eternal world. You suddenly start living in two worlds, in a sense. You are thinking in light of eternity. You are planning and living your life accordingly. And that is a good place to be.
We all should be looking forward to that day-with one foot on earth and the other in heaven.
