Beyonce Pregnant: VMA Announcement a Stunt for Record Sales?

After Beyoncé announced her pregnancy at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, record sales for the singer’s latest musical release were boosted.

After seeing the progression of Beyoncé's works following her big announcement at the VMAs, some suspected that the singer purposely chose the forum to help capitalize on her pregnancy with record sales.

One Twitter user called the event a publicity stunt.

“Beyonce you have officially stooped to the lowest of low,” HautePinkPumps tweeted. “Publicity stunt of the year! Pregnancy? Your album sales must really be bad.”

Another tweeter was sure that the pregnancy announcement and low album sales correlated with one another.

“Beyonce's album comes out and receives the lowest sales of her career..three months later she's (pregnant),” GREGstradamus tweeted. “Are all thinking what I'm thinking?”

GREGstradamus was not alone in his thought process.

“Beyonce's been pregnant for a few months,” itsmelashaun tweeted. “She knew what she was doing. Album sales.”

Before the big announcement, Beyoncé's album, “4”, which was released on June 24, sold less than 700,000 units according to Nielsen. This seemed disappointing for some, who watched the singer’s 2003 solo debut “Dangerously in Love” sell 3.3 million.

Beyoncé's 2006 release, “B’Day” pulled in 3 million units while the 2008 release “I Am...Sasha Fierce” sold 5 million. After two months on the shelves, the singer’s latest album seemed to be under-performing in comparison to her other efforts.

After Beyoncé performed the song “Love on Top” from the album “4”, Rolling Stone reports that her record sales were boosted. Before she performed the song, the singer told fans that she would like them “to feel the love that’s growing inside”

Days later, “Love on Top” made its way into iTunes Top 10 song charts, where it is currently number six. The album “4,” currently sits at number 10.
