We were amazed at the response we received, said Rev. Daniel Willis, CEO of Bible Society NSW (New South Wales).
Willis, who recently returned from a two-week visit with the chairman of Bible Society in Australia and a team of Australians to the provinces of Sichuan, Liaoning, Xian and Henan, reported, At our meeting with the Religious Affairs Bureau official in Ba Zhong County, he told us that although he was an atheist, he wanted to help the Christians build more churches because of the impact they were having on the community by caring for the elderly, feeding the homeless and caring for children and orphans.
Such a response was truly unexpected and quite remarkable, Willis said.
Meanwhile, in Liaoning, the team distributed 5,000 Bibles over three days.
Bibles were distributed to Chaoyang County Church, Xi Da Ying Zi Church, Qing song Ling Church near the Inner Mongolian border, and Zhu Lu Ke Church. These churches were very poor but the joy of our Christian brothers and sisters in receiving a Bible was very evident, Willis remarked.
Although we spoke different languages and came from different countries, we were united in our love of Jesus. The Chinese Christians showed us great hospitality and we were able to share fellowship with them as we prayed for one another, he added.
In Sinchuan, the team traveled into the mountains, and visited two churches and eight meeting points to distribute 3,000 Bibles. At the Yi Long Church, 2000 Bibles were left because there are fifteen meeting points associated with the church.
We were able to charge the pastor with the task of ensuring the Bibles were given out freely to those who could read, Willis reported. In Ba Zhong, we left 600 Bibles for distribution to eighteen meeting points associated with this church.
During the mid-October visit, progress was also made with the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the Beijing Religious Affairs Bureau and the Beijing Christian Council in providing Christian material for the 2008 Olympics.
As a result of the visit, Bible Society NSW reports that it is looking at a number of ways in which they can help Chinese Churches and Christians.
These include:
- Providing funding to purchase a Bible warehouse.
- Assisting with a literary program.
- Purchasing another van for Bible distribution.
