Biden admin. praises 'strong argument’ in defense of Roe

The Biden administration’s solicitor general was one of two attorneys urging the Supreme Court to uphold a lower court ruling finding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban unconstitutional. White House officials repeatedly weighed in on the oral arguments when pressed by the media.

After he finished remarks about the supply chain crisis currently engulfing the United States, President Joe Biden was asked to give his reaction to the oral arguments in Dobbs. “I didn’t see any of the debate today — or just the presentation today,” Biden responded

“I support Roe v. Wade,” he stressed. “I think it’s a rational position to take, and I continue to support it.”

At a White House press briefing Wednesday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki elaborated on the Biden administration's position on the oral arguments and the abortion issue: “He will be updated and briefed by his team on those arguments. I know we were all impressed by the strong argument in defense of — for the protection of Roe v.  Wade and the woman’s right to choose made by the Solicitor General during the hearings this morning.”

“I would note that the president believes — since you gave me the opportunity — that the Mississippi law blatantly violates women’s constitutional rights to safe and legal abortions. This case presents a grave threat to women’s rights — to all of our rights — as protected under Roe v. Wade for nearly half a century. Every woman — every American deserves access to healthcare, including reproductive healthcare, and the president is deeply committed to the constitutional right.”
