'Big Bang Theory' Season 9 Spoilers: Showrunner Says More Big 'Tent-Pole' Events To Occur, But No Babies In Near Future

After Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) finally slept together in last week's much-hyped Season 9 episode, "The Opening Night Excitation," what's next for the nerds in "The Big Bang Theory?"

Showrunner Steve Molaro talked to Variety after the episode aired and clarified some points raised by die-hard fans of the show. First, he addressed their concerns that the episode's sex plot deviated from Sheldon's character and was kind of a sell-out. "I don't think we ever tapped into Sheldon being asexual enough that we ever thought it would be a sellout when we got to this point," "The Big Bang Theory" boss pointed out in the report. He added that Sheldon and Amy finally having sex was something that the writers had been talking about early on and that he believes that the act evolved naturally in the course of the couple's 5 1/2-year relationship.

Molaro also talked about what's in store for the seven characters, saying that there is still a lot of dynamics to explore. According to the executive producer, the way the show depicts the lives of the characters, who have been growing in front of viewers for more than eight years now, reflects real life, where small events occur on a daily basis, but where major events like someone getting married or having a baby also happen every now and then. "So it's nice to have these tent-pole events, and then there's the smaller, more typical stories that we've done," Molaro said.

That being said, would any of the characters having a baby be the next step? According to Molaro, "Not at the moment." He explained: "Babies have a tendency to alter the DNA of a show a little more than we're looking to at this time. There are other avenues we want to explore before we get to the pitter-patter of little nerd feet."

"Big Bang Theory" returns to continue its ninth season on Jan. 7 on CBS.
