Big Ben's Tower Renaming Gathers Support
The iconic tower housing Big Ben in London, England may be renamed after the Queen, following a campaign to change the name.
A majority of British MPs have given their support for the change to go ahead with more than half signing the proposal to amend the name to the "Elizabeth Tower."
Tobias Ellwood, of the British Conservative Party, filed the motion, which has now received the backing of the three main British political party leaders. The move is thought to have been made to tie in with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year.
Ellwood has insisted that the clock tower be renamed after the Queen to formally recognize her 60 years of service to the country. He said, "Commemorating such an iconic landmark is indeed a truly exceptional tribute and I am grateful that a majority of MPs have now confirmed that the Queen deserves such an outstanding accolade," according to the BBC.
Big Ben is the nickname for the 13.5 ton bell contained within the tower, and the Palace of Westminster currently refers to the landmark as the "Clock Tower."
The only other monarch in British history to survive 60 years on the throne was also a queen; Queen Victoria.
