Biggie Smalls Trends on Twitter 15 Years After Death

Twitter users have honored the 15th anniversary of Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls, with messages on Friday.

The rapper was shot in Los Angeles, Calif. on March 9, 1997 at the age of 24. Born Christopher George Latore Wallace, he also went by nicknames Big Poppa and The Black Frank White.

B.I.G. was killed during a drive-by shooting by an unknown assailant. His death was mourned by thousands of fans, and he has been listed as one of the greatest rappers of all time. B.I.G. has certified sales of 17 million units in the U.S. and his music continues to earn revenue even today.

The rapper is survived by his wife, singer Faith Evans, and two children.

On the fifteenth anniversary of his death, "Biggie Smalls" became a trending topic on Twitter. The social media site was flooded with messages of remembrance and respect for the rapper.

"I don't name top 5 dead or alive," wrote Gizmo. "But I can tell you, Biggie is definitely up there. RIP to all dope lyrical MC's that have passed on."

DJ Drama posted, "Biggie was the first to make #qualitystreetmusic."

The Twitter account for the Maybach Music Group also paid homage, writing "R.I.P. BIGGIE."

"R.I.P. Christopher Wallace aka Notorious B.I.G., Big Poppa, and Biggie Smalls. A Man, poet, emcee, father, & son," wrote Joseph. He also pointed out, "he'd be forty this year. #RIPBIG."

Many users are posting memories of the day they learned of Biggie's death.

"I was in the car listening to Russ Parr ad Olivia Fox and me and my uncle pulled up at City Place Mall and they said Biggie died," recounted Sky on Twitter Friday.

Keyshia Cole Gibson recalled on Twitter: "I remember Biggie came to Eastmont Mall in Oakland. Just a kid, I said 'can't believe u came here' he said 'why wouldn't I?' RIP Biggie!!"

Matt wrote, "I remember the exact day I heard Biggie for the first time."

Trending topics on Twitter Friday also included "#RIPBIG," "Christopher Wallace," and "Notorious BIG."

In Brooklyn, New York, fans of the rapper visited a mural painted in his honor Friday.

The photo posted on Twitter by Talib Greene included the caption, "Brooklyn, New York City - where they paint murals of Biggie."
