Bill Maher's Problem Isn't With Tebow, But Christianity (VIDEO)
Bill Maher's recent Twitter rants against Tim Tebow may reflect a deeper issue that the comedian has with organized religion.
After receiving backlash from poking fun at Tebow on Christmas Eve, the political commentator and comedian dished out yet another Tebow diss on New Year’s Eve.
Maher took to Twitter to ring in the new year by taking pictures of himself mimicking the “Tebowing” trend.
"Just in case #Kim Jung-iL DID die and came back to life, I decided to do my daily Tebowing by him," Maher wrote on New Year's Eve. "TREEbowing Happy New Year everybody and thanks to the 600,000 who joined me on twitter in 2011."
The comedian also took a crack at newly divorced comedian Russell Brand and his now ex-wife, singer Katy Perry while tweeting over the weekend.
"My thoughts/prayers go out to Russell and Katy and I'm calling on our lord and savior Tim Tebow to bring them back together for a makeup f---,” Maher tweeted.
This was not Maher’s first time mocking Tebow’s faith. After Tebow and the Denver Broncos lost their Christmas Eve game, Maher wasted no time in poking fun at the NFL star.
“Wow, Jesus just f----- #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve,” he tweeted. “Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ‘Hey, Buffalo’s killing them.”
Everyone did not find the comedian’s tweets funny, and many of the Twitter community reacted negatively to his Tebow insults.
“Bill Maher is going to make me cheer for Tim Tebow,”one verbal spectator tweeted. “The hate is getting out of control."
Still, Maher brushed off the comments as overreactions.
"Overreaction from bible thumpers re my Tebow tweet reminds me of North Koreans wailing at the Kim Jung-il funeral: Brainwashing is brainwashing," he wrote.
Bill Maher's issue with Tebow may have less to do with the football star and more to do with the public display of his anti-Christian sentiments. In 2008, the comedian wrote and starred in a comedic documentary called "Religulous" where he poked fun at organized religion.
The comedian tweeted his real feelings about Christmas recently, in the form of a previously recorded “Funny or Die” skit.
“This is our real religion, greed. People pretend to go nuts for Jesus but I don't know,” Maher said in the skit. “The Pentecostals are faking it. No one can really speak in languages they don't know.”
Although he admitted to being ignorant about the subject matter, Maher also maintained that the majority of the world is just as ignorant.
“As for me I don’t know what spirituality means, but I know if you're weeping over a sweater you don't either," he said.
Still, many feel Maher’s dissection of religion is too disrespectful, and think his brand of comedy should change or cease altogether.
“Bill Maher has got to go,” one person tweeted. “Time for America to defend all people. Even comedians must be held responsible for their comments.”
