Billy Bob Thornton Misses Angelina Jolie?
In a recent interview, Billy Bob Thornton has admitted that he "blew it" when it came to his relationship with Angelina Jolie.
The 56-year-old Oscar-winning actor wed Jolie, 36, in 2000 but they split three years later. Thornton cited his insecurities as the reason the marriage failed during his interview with ABC's "Nightline."
"We had a great marriage and I chickened out because I didn't feel good enough," said the actor. "That's all that happened. It was no big deal, we never hated each other."
Thornton went on to explain that relationships in Hollywood have a particularly difficult obstacle.
"When you're in a relationship, any two celebrities or whatever, you know, I think that puts a lot of pressure," Thornton told "Nightline" during the interview, which aired Wednesday. "When Angie and I got married, I was more famous than she was to start with and then she becomes this big thing, it's hard in these relationships."
The pair met in the late 1990s when Jolie had already earned an Oscar for her role in "Girl, Interrupted" but had not yet emerged as the superstar she is today. Because of Thornton's low self-esteem, the two divorced in 2003.
"I blew it because I didn't think I was good enough for her," he said, noting that he felt "like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs … People have actually said that I didn't deserve to be with her."
Although Thornton and Jolie divorced, the two remain friends.
"We had a great time together," added Thornton.
The relationship is detailed in Thornton's new book, "The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts," in which Jolie penned the forward.
Jolie recently became engaged to her longtime partner Brad Pitt, with whom she shares six children. Their relationship receives fervent media attention, and the couple is rumored to be planning a wedding to take place at their French chateaux to avoid the public eye.
