Black History Month: 8 historically significant African American churches
Tindley Temple United Methodist Church — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Tindley Temple United Methodist Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was founded by and named after Charles Albert Tindley, an influential African American pastor.
A native of Maryland, Tindley was famous for his musical talents, having written several popular hymns, including "Stand by Me," "Nothing Between," and "Beams of Heaven.”
During the 1920s, while Tindley was pastor of the church, the congregation swelled to approximately 10,000 members, making it one of the largest Methodist churches in the United States.
According to a 2015 video by United Methodist Communications, approximately 50 United Methodist pastors owe their spiritual upbringing to Tindley Temple.
