Season 4 of "Black-ish" will be tackling some serious issues and themes. This much was already exhibited in the premiere episode, which talked about slavery and how the subject makes some people uncomfortable. While speaking to Variety, creator Kenya Barris revealed that the inspiration to make the episode a musical one came from Lin-Manuel Miranda and "Hamilton."

"It might make people uncomfortable, but I think that's what the show is about," he said. "I'm so quick to blow off or laugh off our own things like Juneteenth, but when you really look at it, it is an amazing moment of American history that marked the end of a really dark period. Why should we not talk about it? It's a part of who we are, good or bad. It's what America is."

Barris also previewed that the rest of the season will explore other important topics while also diving deeper into the Johnson family's story. Zoe (Yara Shahidi) will be moving out this season, and her departure will certainly affect the family in different ways.

"We're trying to just have the conversations that they would actually be having as a family grows," he said.

"Black-ish" season 4 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
