'black-ish' Spin-off Air Date, News: 'grown-ish' Trailer Sees Zoey Adjusting to College, Dre in Tears

Freeform has released a first look at the upcoming "black-ish" spin-off "grown-ish."

The promo video opens with Yara Shahidi's Zoey pointing out that she has only been away in college for three days, but her parents are already freaking out. Dre (Anthony Anderson) is in the closet, crying, "It hurts so bad." Zoey asks him to stop sobbing, but her father only screams even louder.

"grown-ish" follows Zoey, the popular and stylish eldest daughter of Dre and Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) from "black-ish," as she begins a new chapter in her life by going to college at Southern California University.

The clip sees Zoey adjusting to college life, freaking out and throwing away what she believes is drugs. Her friend points out to her that the "drug" is only Adderall.

"I know. My little brother should be on it. My dad, too," Zoey says.

Bow also appears in the promo video, telling Zoey that she "had such high hopes" for her daughter. When Zoey is somewhat surprised by her mother's words, Bow clarifies that she really did not have high hopes for her. As the video previews, the show will also see how upper class mixes with the lower class. Zoey's relationship with her roommate Ana (Francia Raisa) is also glimpsed, and it is fair to say that they are not immediately the best of friends.

The upcoming spin-off is set to premiere early next year with two back-to-back episodes. According to Entertainment Weekly, it will be part of Freeform's Wednesday night comedy schedule, alongside "Alone Together" from producer The Lonely Island.

"At Freeform, we are committed to our audience; and this past year, we refined our programming strategy to be a destination for trendsetting originals that champion youth culture," Freeform president Tom Ascheim said.

Season 1 of "grown-ish" will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.
