'Black Mirror' Season 4 Plot News: Jodie Foster Details on 'Beautiful and Troubling' Episode
Oscar winner Jodie Foster directed an episode of the "Black Mirror" anthology series for Netflix. The Hollywood star detailed what her story entailed on a British talk show.
Foster told Jonathan Ross her "Black Mirror" Season 4 episode, titled "Arkangel," held something personal because it centered on a mom, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, and her daughter. It made Foster reflect on her close relationship with her mother, Evelyn, who is suffering from dementia.
"[The episode] is very much about a mother-daughter relationship and that kind of beautiful and troubling symbiotic bond between the two," Foster said and revealed her mom hardly recognizes her now. "That's hard and also really beautiful to be able to know that at the end of your parent's life that you are there for them and that you are the last face that they will ever see."
Clips from Foster's "Black Mirror" season 4 episodes were teased during the PaleyFest panel in New York. It showed DeWitt's character and her 4-year-old daughter getting used to an experimental chip on her tiny brain, which allowed the mom to monitor her at all times. The chip also enabled the mom to block any stimuli that could elicit fear in the child.
It remains to be seen if this experiment has some fallout as most "Black Mirror" episodes go. The series usually doesn't delve on happy endings.
Foster, however, hinted that "Arkangel" will explore the complicated dilemma moms have with their daughters. The director shared that any mom would want their girls to grow up as fearless women but moms also don't exactly want to let go of their daughters even if they need to spread their wings.
Netflix has not revealed when "Black Mirror" season 4 will begin streaming on the platform but it will likely arrive in this winter. Previous seasons of the dystopian series remain steaming on the site.
Charlie Brooker created "Black Mirror" in 2011, which first ran on British television. Netflix acquired the show in 2015.
