'Black Mirror' Season 4 Spoilers, Release Date: Creator Teases 'Different Tones,' What to Expect

When the fourth season of "Black Mirror" releases on Netflix, fans can expect different genres and tones to be explored.

"Black Mirror" is known for its dark theme and exploration of technological advancements. Fans got a taste of a more positive episode with season 3's Emmy-winning "San Junipero," and it looks like there will be more than just bleakness in the season to come.

"We've gone for lots of different tones this season," creator Charlie Brooker told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. "There's a couple more comedic. There's some that are not nihilistically horrible from beginning to end and there are others that are."

Brooker also teased some particularly interesting episodes. The upcoming season will apparently have a black and white episode, an indie drama-type episode, a lengthy 74-minute episode, and overall, "a fairly taut story." The episodes were already previewed in a teaser trailer that Netflix released earlier this year.

One of the episodes that was discussed is "U.S.S. Callister," which has obvious nods to "Star Trek." However, Brooker cautioned that, as with most "Black Mirror" episodes, viewers should not immediately judge what they see.

"It certainly sticks out," he said, comparing it to the reception "San Junipero" got when images of that episode were first revealed. "There's certainly more to it than meets the eye."

Additionally, Brooker admitted that some episodes may reflect real-life events though he certainly did not actively intend for that to happen.

"We tried not to think about that," he said of pulling stories from headlines. "But if you look at 'Callister' there are some stuff that leaked in from the outside world. There is stuff that has to do with regimes, you could say, that's not there and also very much there."

Brooker previously teased that this is the show's "most ambitious" season thus far. And while a fifth season has yet to be commissioned, recent Emmy wins boost the show's chances.

"Black Mirror" season 4 will premiere later this year.
