The movie serves as a sequel to the 1982 "Blade Runner" movie, which turned out to be a flop because of its failure to connect with the masses. The original film only closed at just around $28 million, causing its producers to shelf the idea of creating a sequel for more than three decades. However, everything changed when Ridley Scott's 1979 film "Alien" got its sequel that surprisingly succeeded.
Although "Blade Runner 2049" has yet to break even, it has earned generally positive reviews, with film critics shouting their praises for the Ryan Gosling-led movie. Currently, it has an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics commend its creators for its powerful political, social, and moral themes.

"Blade Runner 2049" picks up 30 years since the events of "Blade Runner and ends with Deckard's (Harrison Ford) reunion with his daughter, Dr. Ana Stelline (Carla Juri). The long awaited reunion between the father and her daughter sets up a possible "Blade Runner" sequel, which will explore how Deckard and Ana's relationship will develop through time.
Aside from Deckard and Ana's storyline, another plotline left open by "Blade Runner 2049" is the Black Out, which is threatening to cause destruction in the follow-up movie. It looks like K's (Gosling) storyline is not yet over either, as it was revealed that Wallace Corporation could grow a new version of him in a tank.
Denis Villeneuve has yet to confirm if a "Blade Runner 2049" will have a sequel, but it is possible, considering the narrative threads left open in the current film.
