Bob Dole Endorses Mitt Romney
Bob Dole has announced his endorsement of Mitt Romney in the 2012 Presidential election.
Dole gave his endorsement via an open letter to Iowans, which was published yesterday. Dole wrote: “A number of my friends are currently candidates seeking the GOP nomination. But the time has now come for us to decide who among them can defeat Barack Obama in 2012."
He continued, "I’ve made my decision, and I believe our best hope lies in Governor Mitt Romney.”
Dole praised Romney’s history as a businessman and governor “who managed to both balance the state’s budget and cut taxes while dealing with an overwhelmingly Democratic state legislature.”
Romney also received an endorsement from Iowa’s The Des Moines Register newspaper. He is currently running second in the latest Gallup Poll, at four points behind Newt Gingrich.
Dole has experience with the presidential election, running as both a vice president and presidential candidate. In 1976, he was Gerald Ford’s running mate and lost. And in 1980, he lost the Republican presidential nomination to Ronald Reagan.
Dole also ran in 1996, finally winning the Republican nomination, but lost to Democrat Bill Clinton. He retired from politics after the 1996 election and has since worked for a Washington, D.C. law firm and as a public speaker.
On Romney’s ethics, Dole wrote, “Have shone through in both debates and in my own visits with him [and] will serve him well in the White House.”
