Bob Dole: Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon Would Not Survive in Current Republican Party
Bob Dole, former Senate Majority leader and presidential candidate, recently revealed that he does not believe Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon would have fared well in today's Republican Party.
Dole went on to explain that one of the problems with the current state of the GOP is that its members are too caught up with attack-minded politics and that that their agenda is not focused on positive aspects.
"They ought to put a sign on the National Committee doors that says 'closed for repairs,' until New Year's Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas," Dole told Fox News Sunday.
He went on to add that "Reagan couldn't have made it. Certainly, Nixon couldn't have made it, because he had ideas. We might've made it, but I doubt it."
But Republicans were not the only political party that caught the former politician's eye. Dole also had strong words for President Obama, whom he thought did not establish enough across-the-aisle relationships during his first term to adequately affect change in his second term.
"I'm not a critic of the President, but I think one mistake he has made was not getting together more with Congress early on in his first administration. I think as a president, he lacks communication skills with his own party, let alone the Republican Party. And he's on the road too much," said Dole.
Dole did offer some advice as to how some of the current members of the GOP could win in a general election.
"We will not win elections by simply pointing out the failures of the other side. We must boldly paint the picture of … how incredibly bright America's future can be," Dole added.
