Bode Miller Brother Dies of Apparent Seizure at 29
Bode Miller's brother, Chelone, was found dead in his home on Sunday. Authorities have said that they think Chelone Miller suffered a seizure and passed away.
"Chelone Miller was an aspiring elite athlete who had made great progress as a snowboardcross rider this past season. We are all deeply saddened at the news of his death and extend our condolences to the entire Miller family," U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt said in an official statement.
Miller was found unresponsive in the van that he lived in, in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. The 29-year-old had a history of seizures ever since being involved in a 2005 motorcycle crash that left him in a coma for 11 days. He reportedly suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the crash and lost his memory for an entire month.
Miller was an up-and-coming ski racer and professional snowboarder who loved to compete in the X Games who is fondly remembered by friends, family, and fellow competitors.
"He was a very talented snowboarder and a great friend," John Teller, an X Games competitor, told ESPN.
"Chilly always struck me as one to do things his way," Nate Holland added. "He'd pop up here and there in his van as kind of a lone wolf, and throw down. He was a hard-charging snowboarder."
"Broken hearted to hear of the passing of Chelone Miller," tweeted Emily Cook. "Sending love and prayers to Bode, friends and family."
Bode Miller is a 5-time Olympic medalist in alpine skiing, and his brother was like family to the U.S. Ski Team. The Miller brothers took the snowboarding world by storm and were able to accomplish a great deal within a short time.
"Chelone Miller, brother to @MillerBode, had heart, a huge smile, eternal optimism, and incredible snowboarding talent," the U.S. Ski Team tweeted.
"RIP Chelone Miller. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Miller family and @MillerBode. Stay strong," added Lauren Hale.
