Bon Iver Wins Best New Artist (VIDEO)

Bon Iver has won the Best New Artist award at the Grammys 2012, but his win has had  many people wondering who the group actually is.

For starters, was founded by lead-singer Justin Vernon. According to MTV, Vernon "began his career playing in the jazzy party band Mount Vernon, which transitioned into De Yarmond Edison, formed with some old high school pals who all moved to North Carolina in 2005 to spread their musical wings."

Iver won over more well-known artists Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry, J. Cole and Skrillex. Predictions made before the award show did not favor Iver and instead picked Nicki Minaj for the win. Iver has been the underdog of the Grammy's, with total album sales of just over 357,000, compared to Adele's best-selling album, 21.

Even Bon Iver did not expect to win. "It's really hard to accept this award. There's so much talent out here…and there's a lot of talent that's not here tonight. It's also hard to accept because you know, when I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I'm a little bit uncomfortable up here," Vernon said in his acceptance speech last night.

"I don't think the Bon Iver record is the kind of record that would get nominated for a Grammy," Vernon told the New York Times in December. "I kinda (sic) felt like going up there and being like: 'Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and looking at each other and pretending that this is important.' That's what I would say."

Many Twitter users are conflicted over Bon Iver's win. PilotBacon tweeted, "Why are we condemning people who don't know who Bon Iver is instead of patting them on the back for taking a better path in life?"

Ted Stryker tweeted, "Just because you sell a lot of albums & get a bunch of top 40 radio play, that does not make u (sic) a Grammys (sic) shoe in. Congrats Bon Iver." User Lex added, "pretty (sic) happy that Bon Iver beat Nicki Minaj and Skrillex to Best New Artist, but they've been around for five years, why are they 'new'?"

It seems that more people are wondering who Bon Iver actually is before making their decision about whether to offer congrats.
