'Bourne Legacy' with Jeremy Renner Hits Web (VIDEO)

The makers of "The Bourne Identity" have released the trailer for a sequel, "The Bourne Legacy," which has set the internet ablaze.

Jeremy Renner will replace Matt Damon in the new "Bourne" franchise installment. Renner portrays Aaron Cross, a government asset similar to Jason Bourne in previous films. The actor has appeared in thrillers such as "The Hurt Locker" and "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

Also, the film has a new director with Tony Gilroy replacing former director Paul Greengrass who helmed the film franchise's 2004 installment.

"Jason Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg," the trailer for the new film explains.

"The Bourne Legacy" sees actors Albery Finney and Joan Allen reprising their roles while also starring Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, and Stacy Keach. The film from Universal Pictures hits theaters Aug. 3.

In the trailer, Renner is seen badly beaten and being questioned by government "program" officials. After pledging his allegiance to the "program," the trailer reveals action shots of the main character attacking what appears to be security guards while shots and explosions are fired.

The "Bourne" action and thriller series consist of 2002's "The Bourne Identity," "The Bourne Supremacy" of 2004, and "The Bourne Ultimatum" of 2007. As a franchise, the films have received wide critical acclaim for their realistic plots and riveting action scenes.

Gilroy considered numerous actors for the role of Aaron Cross in the upcoming film. The director's list included Jake Gyllenhaal, "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz, "Boardwalk Empire" actor Michael Pitt, and Josh Hartnett- just to name a few.

While many reports indicate that Renner's character replaced the former "Bourne" star, it is possible that Damon could return as his character, Jason Bourne, in future films.

In another trailer release this week, "The Amazing Spider-Man" has also created a frenzy online. Similar to "The Bourne Legacy," "Spiderman" also hits theaters this summer, but will be available in 3-D.
