Boxing News 2015: 42-Year-Old Juan Manuel Marquez Wants Cinco de Mayo 2016 Fight

Boxing veteran and four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is looking to make a comeback in May 2016.

In a report by Boxingscene, the 42-year old Mexican boxer is planning to schedule his next fight on his nation's holiday, 'Cinco de Mayo' of the coming year.

"I'd love for it to be in May, on [Cinco De Mayo], which is celebrated much in Vegas and why not here in Mexico City," Marquez told ESPN Deportes. "It would be my dream, but I have think about it."

"El Dinamita" last saw action in May 2014, against former light welterweight world champion Mike "Mile High" Alvarado. With the World Boxing Organization (WBO) International Welterweight title on the line, Marquez went on to win the fight via unanimous decision.

Having been a professional prizefighter since 1993, Marquez has been considered as one of the most successful and decorated boxers to come out of Mexico. Training under the renowned Romanza Gym under the legendary Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, he was able to rack up a win-loss slate of 56-7-1, with 40 victories by knockout.

He also faced the game's biggest and most prominent names, such as Floyd Mayweather Jr, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, and Timothy Bradley.

But Marquez has so far been known for his four memorable fights against eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, whom he first faced in 2004. The official record states Marquez holds one victory over Pacquiao, when he scored a highlight reel sixth round knockout when the two fought in 2012.

Marquez did admit that he was already contemplating on retiring last year, but now says that he has been in good shape. He did clarify, however, that he will walk away from the sport if he does not "feel it" anymore.

"I thought I was already set on retirement, but then I got an itch to make a fight in our country and to thank the fans for their support, but we must mediate, think, train," he said. "I'm training well, and we'll start to see if that emotion [to fight again] is close to the surface [and if I don't feel it] I'll announce my retirement."
