Boxing News 2015: Roy Jones Jr Knocked Out, Now Given Medical Clearance
Four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. suffered his first ever knockout defeat as a Russian citizen on Saturday in Moscow.
The 35-year old Welsh boxer Enzo Maccarinelli stopped "Captain Hook" in the fourth round of their fight.
It was an event that was heavily hyped, as it was given full coverage by the national media in Russia and was televised by the First TV channel. In a report by Alexey Sukachev of Boxingscene, Maccarinelli played the aggressor role from the get-go, and landed some hard punches in the process.
The second round become more of a display of "Big Mac's" skills, as he was able to rough up the former world champion more. The fourth round was when Maccarinelli put the final nail on the coffin.
After initially sending Jones to the canvas through a series of uppercuts, he went on to throw an uppercut-overhand right combination that sent Jones face-first on the canvas.
Time of the stoppage was at the 1:51 mark.
Apparently, World of Boxing's Andrey Ryabinskiy did not take Jones' loss very lightly. In another report by Vadim Pushkin of Boxingscene, Ryabinskiy described Jones' fight as "useless" and "harmful", pinning the blame mostly on fellow promoter Vladimir Hryunov.
"It shouldn't have been arranged," Ryabinskiy said. "Hryunov created a let down and tricked both our country and Roy Jones Jr. by staging this nonsense."
"Roy can be a singer, can open new boxing schools, and can help by strengthening prizefighting in Russia, but he shouldn't be fighting in such fights at this stage of his career," he added.
At 46-years of age, Jones has decided to continue with his prizefighting aspirations. He currently holds a record of 62-9 with 45 victories by knockout.
Another report by Boxingscene states that Jones has already been given medical clearance, as confirmed by Hryunov. The promoter specified that Jones underwent a medical examination wherein no threat to his health was found.
He also had a press conference in Moscow recently where he said wanted to continue to fight "at least one more time." If it was his time to leave boxing, he said he wanted it to be on his terms.
