Brad Pitt: My Religious Upbringing Was 'Stifling'
Brad Pitt has opened up about his upbringing in a Christian family in Missouri – and his testimony isn’t exactly glowing.
He grew up the son of Southern Baptist conservatives and his younger brother, Doug, is still an active churchgoer.
Speaking to reporters at the Cannes Film Festival this week, Pitt admitted he has “issues” with religion.
“I got brought up being told things were God’s way, and when things didn’t work out it was called God’s plan,” the actor said.
“I’ve got my issues with it. Don’t get me started. I found it very stifling.”
The 47-year-old father of six was in Cannes for the first showing of his new film with Sean Penn, “Tree of Life,” in which he plays an overbearing father.
He expressed the hope that his real-life kids with Angelina Jolie will grow up thinking of him as a good dad and actor.
“I think of everything I do now that my kids are going to see when they grow up and how are they going to feel,” he said.
“But they know me as a dad and I hope they’ll just think of me as a pretty damn good actor.”
Pitt isn’t the only celebrity with “issues” about their religious upbringing.
Pop star Katy Perry has spoken often about growing up with strict evangelical parents.
She recently said the only book her mother ever read to her was the Bible and that buying non-Christian music was a no-no.
She even went as far as to say: “I didn’t have a childhood.”
