Brad Pitt to Return for 'World War Z 2'

"World War Z" is getting a sequel and it has been recently announced that Brad Pitt will return to reprise his role as Gerry Lane in "World War Z 2." The movie recently landed a release date, which will be on June 9, 2017.

"World War Z" was a zombie movie that became a blockbuster hit and is in fact considered the highest grossing blockbuster film in Pitt's career. The movie had its narrative "wrapped everything up in a bow" so it is yet unclear how Pitt's character will come in the story or whether the sequel will strictly follow the events immediately after the first movie, Cinema Blend speculated.

The sequel already has a director attached to it, J.A. Bayona of "The Impossible," and the report says that he is set to "deliver some big time scares from the living dead/infected." A year ago, Steven Knight was hired by Paramount Studios to write the sequel, which was co-financed by Skydance. Pitt will also return to produce together with Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner for Plan B, according Variety.

This movie will be Pitt's first sequel that he will be doing solo. The only other sequels he has worked on are those of "Ocean's Eleven" and that was with other stars like George Clooney, Matt Damon and others.

"World War Z" was directed by Marc Foster in 2013 and grossed a whopping $540 million worldwide. It was based on a novel by Max Brooks titled "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War."

There are no other casting reports as of yet which may happen up until the end of 2015, and it is too early in the movie's development for a definite production timetable. The movie when released in 2017, will go head to head with Twentieth Century Fox's "Fantastic Four 2."
