Brady Quinn Questions Tebow's Humility, Credits 'Luck' for Victories
In an article from the March issue of GQ, former Notre Dame standout and current backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos Brady Quinn had some harsh words for his teammate Tim Tebow.
When asked about the Broncos' success during Tebow's time as a starter, Quinn said, "we've had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply."
In comparison, linebacker Von Miller said, "you could just see our team's resiliency in action. Nobody was giving up."
Ex-quarterback Kurt Warner described the success as "divine intervention."
Last season, Tebow became the starter in week seven and led the Broncos to a series of improbable comebacks before losing in the second round of the playoffs to the New England Patriots. He finished the season with 12 passing touchdowns, six rushing touchdowns, and four overtime victories, including one in the first round of the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Quinn, on the other hand, has not thrown a pass in a regular season game since coming to Denver. For his career, he has 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, with a career passer rating of 66.8.
As for Tebow's faith, Quinn also had some doubts.
"If you look at [Tebow's rise to fame] as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me," said the second-string quarterback. "When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?"
Quinn was noted for his faith during his time at Notre Dame. In an article for UND.com, Quinn was described as "reading the Bible before every game for inspiration."
He also apparently signed every autograph during his freshman year with his favorite Bible verse, "I can do all things through God who strengthens me (Phillippians 4:13)."
Quinn was not the only Tebow detractor quoted in the article, as Raven's linebacker Terrell Suggs called Tebow "mediocre." Suggs also added, "They say we were giving him a hard time because he's a Christian. No, that's not it! We were giving him a hard time because he was terrible."
It's not surprising that Quinn might be skeptical of Tebow's success.
When the Broncos traded running back Peyton Hillis and a pair of draft picks to the Cleveland Browns in 2010, it looked like the former first-round pick might be able to get a fresh start in Colorado.
Although Quinn had largely been a disappointment in Cleveland, the Broncos initially saw Quinn as the backup to then-starter Kyle Orton.
"Early in the season, there was a game when Kyle [Orton] got hurt and the coaches were calling for me to go in, but Kyle got up and finished the game out. So I was the second-string guy," Quinn explained.
"Then, a few weeks later, they decided to put Tim in. I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that. Just 'cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I didn't have any billboards. That would have been nice," he added.
