Brit Awards 2017: Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran Deliver Politically Charged, Spectacular Performances
The recently concluded 37th Brit Awards featured stellar performances from some of the biggest artists in the music industry, but nothing stood out more than those of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry.
The female "Chained to the Rhythm" star performed a suggestive dance featuring two dancing skeletons that seemed to be dressed as U.S. President Donald Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May. During the politically charged performance, two giant puppets joined Perry on stage to reenact the first meeting of the two leaders in Washington last January.
After the two figures held hands, they suddenly burst into flames, almost literally blowing the house down. The stunt was allegedly a reference to that moment when the U.S. leader held May's hand as they walked out of the White House.
Another talking point in the performance was Perry's backup dancer, who accidentally slipped and plunged into the crowd. While Perry was performing her new song "Chained to the Rhythm," the dancer, dressed as the White House, took a trip downward, drawing laughs from the crowd.
Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran left his fans on cloud nine after he brought out Stormzy for a surprise performance. He performed a medley of his two new singles, "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill," with Stormzy singing a verse from one of the songs.
During his interview with Nick Grimshaw on Feb. 20, Sheeran teased that his performance at the 37th Brit Awards would be pretty interesting. "It's something that I think nobody is expecting. I think it'll be decent. I've managed to keep it secret up until now, which is good. But tomorrow night, I think we're the penultimate act," he said.
The awards night also featured an emotional tribute for the late singer-songwriter George Michael, who passed away last Christmas. The tribute was followed by Chris Martin of Coldplay's stripped performance of the late artist's song, "A Different Corner."
