'Broad City' Season 4 Spoilers: Illustrator Mike Perry Teases 'Weird' Season

The previous episode of "Broad City" season 4, titled "Mushrooms," saw Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson getting high.

As the title hints, Glazer and Jacobson mixed hallucinogenic mushrooms with fennel seeds and yogurt before downing them together. They began seeing things in 2D, and it soon escalated into a full-blown animated bit. The animated part consumed about eight minutes of the entire 22-minute episode.

As usual, illustrator Mike Perry did the animations for the episode. Perry spoke to Vanity Fair about what it took to make "Mushrooms" and how working with Glazer and Jacobson was.

"Twenty-four frames times 60... times eight... so it's like 11,500, just on a guess," Perry said, computing an approximate number for the number of drawings he has done the past year for "Broad City." The show has incorporated animations into episodes before, but this is the first time they utilized it for such an extended portion of the episode.

Perry also revealed that he is given full freedom when it comes to doing the animations for the series. He can only recall one time when they asked him for something somewhat specific.

"I'm always like, 'Do you guys have any inspirations? Do you want me to know anything?' The only time was last season when they said, 'We want to have a patriotic one.' That was it, and all that meant was red, white, and blue," he said.

The fourth season of the Comedy Central show has been impressive, and it looks like it is about to get even more exciting as it progresses. This is because Glazer and Jacobson, also creators of the series, will have more autonomy when it comes to where the season goes.

"It was just presented as an opportunity for them to just go for it—like, 'F--- it, we made it to season four, we're gonna get weird,'" Perry opined.

Season 4 of the New York-based show currently holds a 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has already been renewed for a fifth season.

"Broad City" season 4 airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. EDT on Comedy Central.
