Brooklyn Decker, Rising Star Explains Unusual Name
Starring in two major film releases this weekend, Brooklyn Decker has become one of today's top actresses.
The former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model made her acting debut in 2011's "Just Go WIth It" alongside Jennifer Aniston, but both of her latest projects "Battleship" and "What to Expect When You're Expecting" will hit theaters Friday.
Decker, who is married to tennis star Andy Roddick, is the type of actress moviegoers remember- perhaps because of her unusual name.
"I'm named after a horse," said the actress speaking to Vanity Fair. "My mom's best friend had a horse name Brooke, so my dad suggested 'Brooklyn' as a more formal version, and it just stuck- and now I live in Brooklyn part-time, so go figure."
The Ohio native also explained her departure from modeling at the highest point in her career.
"The Sports Illustrated cover was the last thing I shot," said the 25-year-old. "That week, I told my agent, 'You know what, I really … I don't want to be a model anymore. I really want to do movies.' And I think he wanted to wring my neck at the moment."
In the new movie "What to Expect," Decker portrays a woman married to a former NASCAR driver who is expecting twins. Her role got her thinking of motherhood in real life.
"I think that I'd like to try to be a superwoman and have kids and work, so we'll see if I can actually accomplish that," said the actress, according to Vanity Fair. "But, if we're talking dream scenario, that would probably be it."
"What to Expect When You're Expecting" also sees stars including Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Harrison Ford, Chris Rock, and many others.
Alternately, Decker stars alongside Rihanna and Alexander Skarsgard in "Battleship," also in theaters Friday.
Although she appears in two new releases, Decker said she will not be headed to the movie theater any time soon.
"I have a really difficult time watching myself on film," said the actress speaking to The Washington Post. "I literally cower in my seat and cover my face … There's zero evidence that I was a model in my house, no pictures of me anywhere."
The tall blonde also shared that she is not attached to her roles as an attractive woman.
"I think that's the fun of being an actor," said Decker of potentially making changes to her appearance. "If an actress is concerned about how she's looking all the time, I feel like you can't really focus on becoming a character so I would welcome a physical change."
