Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir Album Lands Top Spot on iTunes Chart

The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir reached a milestone Thursday when the group's new album, Love Lead the Way, landed atop the iTunes Christian and Gospel music chart.

The album, which is the choir's 27th recorded project and its first on the new Brooklyn Tabernacle Music label, also found its way onto the list of iTunes' Top 100 Pop Albums.

"It's amazing that after 20 albums, over 30 years, that people are still connecting to what God is doing through the choir, after all this time, in such a major way," choir spokesperson Jeremy Castro told The Christian Post on Friday. "It's very humbling."

BTC's iTunes success is just the most recent in a long list of accolades the group has received. The choir has earned six Grammy Awards, seven Dove Awards and has had two Billboard chart-topping albums.

Many of the other top Christian albums on iTunes are more contemporary in style, but Castro says BTC has a "kingdom sound" that many people relate to. "People just love to bask in the sound of a choir bringing forth truths in a very majestic way," he said.

The choir consists of 300 singers from a variety of different backgrounds and ethnicities. Earlier this year, the group performed a rendition of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," a song that is on the Love Lead the Way album, at President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony in front of a live audience of 800,000 people plus the millions of people who watched the event on television.

BTC has also performed at other notable locations, including Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, and Radio City Music Hall, and has sold more than four million albums. The group has a number of appearances at major venues planned for this year, and Castro says BTC is becoming "not just a church choir, but America's choir."

Carol Cymbala is the director of the choir. She is the wife of The Brooklyn Tabernacle's pastor, Jim Cymbala.
