Buffalo Bills Tight End Charles Clay Undergoes Knee Surgery, Out for Multiple Weeks
The Buffalo Bills' offense has been horrible so far this season, and it's not going to get any better anytime soon because tight end Charles Clay is expected to miss a significant amount of games.
The Bills head coach Sean McDermott has announced that Clay underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Monday and he will miss multiple weeks while he recovers from the operation.
"I never want to see a guy get hurt, let alone a player of Charles' caliber. But it's next man up. That's what we do. That's what happens in this league. We've gotten hit a little bit by the injury bug," McDermott said, via the Bills' official website.
Clay went down with the injury after safety Shawn Williams went low with a tackle in the first quarter of the Bills' game against the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday. The tight end has been quarterback Tyrod Taylor's favorite target so far this season, so this is a big blow for a team.
Clay has recorded 20 catches for 258 yards and two touchdowns in five games this season.
With Clay hurt, the Bills had to rely on Nick O'Leary last Sunday and he didn't let the team down. The third-year tight end finished the game with five receptions for 54 yards, and he will have to step up once again in the coming weeks.
"I thought Nick did a good job Sunday in the passing game and made some key catches for us. He's a guy that Tyrod trusts and he's made some big plays this year so far. I like the direction he's heading right now."
Fourth-year tight end Logan Thomas may also see an uptick in playing time. Khari Lee is on the roster as well, but he has been inactive in the first five games of the season.
