Building Legacies

But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now. (Joshua 23:8 NIV)

Joshua is a name that almost anyone knows. His name is always associated with Jericho. But it takes more than just winning a battle to build a legacy. There have been innumerable Generals who led armies to battle and won, and yet their names are known by very few people. What was it about Joshua that made him so special? What was it that made him a hero to an entire nation... a man whose name is recorded over and over again in scripture?

It's right here in this one verse... something that he felt so important he had to state it again to the people one more time before he died ... "...hold fast to the Lord your God..." That's what Joshua did. That's what he had done from the first time we read his name. That's the legacy he left the people of Israel. He held fast to the Lord his God. He never wavered. He said it again and again, and he demonstrated it by his own actions. Joshua left a legacy of faith to his people.

What kind of legacy will you leave for your children? Do they see someone who turns to God only in time of trouble? Or do they see someone who depends totally and solely on the Lord for everything every day? Are you a person who uses Jesus' name as the building block for everything you do, or who only uses Jesus' name as a cry of desperation – or even worse, as a curse word?

Think about how you will be remembered by your family and friends. Leaving them the admonition to hold fast to the Lord their God, no matter whether in good times or bad, and leaving them the memory and the example of a person who did just that would be the finest legacy you could build.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3
