Built on the Rock

More Americans today are hungry for the spiritual than perhaps at any other time in history.

On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. —Matthew 16:18

More Americans today are hungry for the spiritual than perhaps at any other time in history. It seems people are in a search mode. That is not to say there are more Christians or even more people in our churches, necessarily. But there is a tangible sense that people are searching for more in life.

Clearly, this is a defining moment for the church to offer the answers people are looking for. But as a familiar song says, we are looking for love in all the wrong places. Many people today are looking for truth in all the wrong places. And it seems they are willing to go anywhere but to church to find it.

Why would people not want to go to church? This question has caught the attention of pastors and experts in the field. So a trend of market-driven churches has developed, essentially adapting to the desires, wants, and even the passing whims of our culture today, in an attempt to attract people and do whatever it takes to get them inside.

But it causes one to wonder, what is the purpose of the church? Has God put the church on this earth for a particular reason? It is very important that we know the answer to these questions.

There is much talk about new ideas, when, in reality, we need old ideas back again. The principles that worked for the first century church will work for ours. And if the Lord tarries, they will work for the generations after us, because some things never change. We need to get back to the principles God laid down. We need to be a church built on the Rock.
