Bus Crash in New York Kills 2, Injures 8
A commercial tour bus traveling from Washington D.C. to Niagara Falls crashed in upstate New York on Sunday afternoon, killing two people and injuring at least eight.
The accident happened on Interstate 390 in Steuben County at approximately 4:15 on the northbound side of the highway, near the town of Cohocton, according to CNN.
A preliminary report indicates that a flat tire might have caused the driver to lose control, New York State Police spokesman, Mark O’Donnell said.
O’Donnell also said that, “a reconstruction team has been assigned to investigate the scene of the accident in hopes of determining the exact cause of the wreck.”
Video footage shot by CNN affiliate WHAM showed a crowded highway, filled with rescue teams transporting victims to ambulances and emergency vehicles. The video also showed that the torn-apart white tour bus could be seen through the trees on the highway.
Walter Feely, with the volunteer Fire Department in Cohocton, reported that injured passengers were taken to several different area hospitals; three patients were taken by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, a fourth was taken there by ambulance, and eight were taken to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
The bus is owned by Bedore Tours from North Tonawanda and according to the company website, they have been conducting tours to Niagara Falls since 1950.
In addition, according to the state Department of Transportation’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Records, the company has had no other recorded accidents within the past two years.
