'Call of Duty' Rumors: 2018 Installment May Feature Modern Elements

2018 'Call of Duty' title expected to be developed by Treyarch

This year's "Call of Duty" game is taking the franchise back to its so-called roots by bringing players back to the era of World War II. And now, the latest rumors are hinting that next year's edition may feature a more modern feel.

Spotted recently by Redditor "Thermikz," a new job listing posted by developer Treyarch may have already given away the central theme of next year's game.

Included in the listing were the usual requirements and responsibilities, though there was a really eye-catching line near the end.

Apparently, the folks over at Treyarch are going to pay more attention to a candidate if this individual has a "deep knowledge base of firearms and modern military technology."

The key word there of course is "modern."

As mentioned earlier, the series is going back to featuring historical settings this year, and it is a move that has proven to be quite popular and has garnered plenty of support from fans.

So why then would the folks over at Treyarch risk making the fans angry again by going modern instead of featuring more historical settings?

Part of that may be because they were unaware that "Call of Duty" fans would really get onboard with going back to the past.

As Game Rant pointed out, there is a good chance that Treyarch may have already started developing the 2018 "Call of Duty" game well before fans let their displeasure be known for "Infinite Warfare" and their approval felt for this year's entry.

By the time those things were made clear, it may have been too late for Treyarch to go in another direction.

Still, even if the 2018 title does not feature a historical setting, installments that arrive after that may go down that road anyway.

Speaking previously to Game Informer, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg shared that he thinks historical settings are "very rich territory" and that the franchise may look to the past again for inspiration.

More news about what's next for the "Call of Duty" franchise should be made available soon.
