Canelo Alvarez News: WBC Gives Status On Fight Against Gennady Golovkin
The World Boxing Council (WBC) is currently working on making the fight between middleweight world champions Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Genandy Golovkin a reality. In fact, reports now say that both camps have met and agreed to have interim bouts before the two boxers fight each other in the fall.
Alvarez won the WBC, Lineal and Ring Magazine titles over Puerto Rican veteran boxer Miguel Cotto in late November, where he emerged victorious via a unanimous decision verdict. In a report by Boxing News 24, Golovkin, who currently holds the WBA, IBF, IBO and WBC interim titles, is the mandatory challenger for Alvarez.
For his part, the 25-year old Mexican boxing sensation says he is ready to face whomever is put in front of him.
"I'll fight anybody, anytime," Alvarez said during the post-fight press conference after facing Cotto. "If you guys don't believe me, I'll get back in and go another 12 rounds."
In a report by Boxingscene.com, the WBC is said to have been "working diligently" to iron out the terms for both parties to make the fight happen. The report adds that both Golden Boy Promotions, which represent Alvarez, and K2 Promotions, which represent Golovkin, have been in close communication, as well.
"Recognizing that their discussions have been ongoing, the WBC has given the parties the flexibility to continue to work amicably to finalize terms, with the ultimate goal being that the two champions meet in the ring," an excerpt of the report reads.
Their efforts paid off as according to a report on ESPN, after the two camps had a meeting Sunday night with Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC president, Alvarez and Golovkin were allowed to have interim fights in the spring before facing each other in the fall. Their opponents in the said fights have yet to be determined as Golovkin is planning to fight in March or April and Alvarez is determined to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, May 7. These fights are intended to build up the momentum leading to the showdown between the two boxers.
Since tasting his first defeat in the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013, Alvarez has been on a rise, defeating his succeeding opponents decisively.
After a TKO victory against Alfredo Angulo that immediately followed the Mayweather fight, he went on to win by unanimous decision against Erislandy Lara, then scored a highlight reel knockout against James Kirkland before facing Cotto.
He holds a record of 46-1-1, with 32 wins by knockout.
Golovkin, on the other hand, has remained undefeated, with a record of 34-0-0, with 31 victories by knockout. He last fought David Lemieux in October, where he won by eighth round TKO.
