Canelo Alvarez next fight rumors: Five possible opponents for the Mexican Brawler

Mexican boxing star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is one of the few remaining attractions in boxing, and after an impressive performance last week, there is a substantial buzz as to whom he'll be fighting next. Let's see who the five highly possible prospects are.

Alvarez knocked out Amir Khan the last time out, and many were more curious on who he would fight next. Alvarez represents a new breed of boxers expected to face the best in the weight division but are hampered of promotional restrictions.

1 – Manny Pacquiao

For some, facing Manny Pacquiao makes zero sense. The Filipino dynamo had already declared after his victory over Timothy Bradley that he is retiring to focus on his political career in the Philippines, not to mention being promoted by rival companies. Per a report from The Examiner the fight may happen. A possible fight between involving Pacquiao and Alvarez was raised following the Filipino's win over Bradley and one interesting angle was seeing Pacquiao face another Mexican, a reason why Pacquiao was somehow non-committal on retirement.

2 – Erislandy Lara

Although the Cuban is a longshot, he was one of Alvarez' hardest foes. This happened back in 2014 where Alvarez almost lost to Lara. Two judges had it for Alvarez while Lara got the nod from the third judge.

3 – David Lemieux

This is one fight not expected to happen anytime soon. Though it makes sense to see a Canelo Alvarez-David Lemieux matchup, both fighters are promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions which prevent it from being staged. In an interview with BoxingNews24.com back in March, De La Hoya said he envisions both fighters meeting in the ring in the future. He however believes that Lemieux still needs more time to develop before he is considered to face Alvarez.

4 – Amir Khan

Now why would Alvarez want to face Amir Khan again? A rematch will likely end up the same way, though antything can happen in the world of boxing.

5 – Gennady Golovkin

At the top of them all is no other than Gennady Golovkin. Triple G has yet to taste defeat and no one has come close to reaching the final bell since 2008, per Bleacher Report. Alvarez needs to face Golovkin at some point to establish his status in the sport, not to mention something boxing fans want to see.
