Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan: De La Hoya Reveals Reason For Fight's Rematch Clause
There is an apparent rematch clause for the middleweight title clash between WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Amir Khan on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
According to Alvarez's promoter and six-division world champion Oscar De La Hoya, it was put in place to recognize how much of a threat Khan is, despite his underdog status.
"I have a rematch clause in place for a reason," De La Hoya said in an interview with Behind the Gloves. "Because Amir Khan is, like I said, a dangerous competitor. His style worries me. His style, his lateral movements, his speed, his ring IQ. That ring IQ has given Canelo a lot of problems."
De La Hoya pointed out the Mexican boxer's fights with Lara and Mayweather, both of which went to distance, and the latter granting him the first and only loss of his professional boxing career.
"If Amir Khan sticks to his game plan for 12 full rounds, and doesn't get caught, it was vital for me to put that rematch (clause) in place, and then we will evaluate things after the fight," De La Hoya said, adding that a fight between Alvarez and Golovkin will be "absolutely" happening.
In another report by Boxingscene, "The Golden Boy" believes that in order for Alvarez to emerge with the victory, he would need to "fight the perfect fight" against Khan. But at the same time, he believes that the first man to make a mistake during the match will be at a great disadvantage.
Las Vegas betting odds have Alvarez as the favorite in the upcoming contest. According to Odds Shark, he is a -500 favorite, while Khan is the +350 underdog. But Khan's fellow fighters, such as former lineal world middleweight champion Andre Ward believes that he has a good fighting chance to pull an upset.
The winner of the said fight will be facing the WBC's mandatory challenger, interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
