Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Rematch Rumors 2017: Boxing Superstars to Meet in the Ring Again Next Year?
The idea of a rematch was instantly brought about after Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin's highly anticipated bout concluded in a controversial split draw.
Both boxing stars claimed victory after the final bell rang. Alvarez believes that he was the "superior" man inside the ring and is convinced that he won seven to eight rounds of the match. Golovkin, on the other hand, says it is the other way around.
After the result of the showdown was announced, both Alvarez and Golovkin expressed interest in doing a rematch. Fans who watch it all go down also immediately expected the two to brawl it out in the ring again.
When HBO's Max Kellerman asked the two fighters about a rematch, both agreed. Golovkin said: "Of course, I want a rematch. I wanted a fight. I want a true fight."
Alvarez had this to say: "Obviously yes, if the people want it." According to Sports Illustrated, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions said that Alvarez will make use of the contractual rematch clause to meet Golovkin once more in the ring, possibly next year.
The scorecards in the historic match show it was indeed a close match. One scored 115–113 for Golovkin while the second judge had a 114–114 scoring. It gets tricky and controversial with Adalaide Byrd's scoreboard who gave it 118–110 in favor of Alvarez.
"That's the life of a judge. She had a bad night in a big fight," Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Bob Bennett said of the veteran judge.
Despite this, fans and critics are one in saying that both Alvarez and Golovkin put on an excellent show that they expected to put out and more. The brawl kept spectators at the edge of their seats as the two traded blows.
The result of the fight meant Golovkin will be keeping his middleweight titles. He received his $3-million guarantee while Alvarez gets $5 million. Both are expected to bag more from the pay-per-view revenue.
