Canon EOS M5 News and Updates: New Mirrorless Camera Officially Released; Specs and Features Revealed
When it comes to digital cameras, Canon has long been a household brand. While it definitely reigns in the point and shoot and DSLR camera departments, it somehow struggles with mirrorless cameras. Now already on their fifth attempt, Canon aims to set things right with the EOS M5.
Design
Through the years, Canon has delivered top-notch cameras to its consumers. The EOS M5 looks and feels more like a DSLR camera than ever before. It now gains a redesigned look, complete with an all-new grip. It now also has an Electronic Viewfinder, similar to what the toughest competition has to offer. The touchscreen LCD at the back also tilts for easier capture of selfie shots.
Sensor
The EOS M5 builds upon everything that the EOS M3 excelled at. The 24.2-megapixel count APS-C sensor from its predecessor still holds the same. However, the EOS M5 received a huge upgrade in the Dual Pixel CMOS AF. This feature has now been one of the trademarks of current Canon cameras. Its main emphasis is on a much faster and more accurate-focusing mechanism.
The sensor of the Canon EOS M5 also now supports a native ISO of 100-25,600. This would allow for a better low-light performance compared to its predecessor. For those who may need it, the EOS M5 is now capable of burst shooting of up to 7 frames per second. This is a huge leap from the EOS M3 that restricts burst shots in continuous autofocus or auto-exposure modes.
The Canon EOS M5 also employs 49 focus points. Scattered throughout the image, these focus points would allow for a much accurate focusing, especially for moving subjects or when nailing narrow depth-of-field images. With all these improvements in its arsenal, the EOS M5 is out to prove that Canon could really deliver what consumers are asking for.
Video, Connections and Battery
The EOS M5 can capture videos in 1080p resolution with 60 frames per second. It has the standard H.264 encoding with a stereo mic support. The new camera also now employs a hybrid image stabilization technology. This combines optical with sensor shift image stabilization on a 5-axis compensation.
Per usual, the Canon EOS M5 features Wi-Fi and NFC connections for easier transfer and remote control of the camera. Furthermore, Canon added Bluetooth support for a more power-efficient connection. The EOS M5 also features a 1040 mAh battery pack, a huge upgrade from the EOS M3's 875 mAh.
Price and Availability
The Canon EOS M5 will start retailing later this year on November. The body-only model will retail for $979.99. There is also the standard bundle with the Canon EF-M 14-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Kit Lens costing $1099. The last bundle is with the newest Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Kit Lens worth $1478.
