'Captain America: Civil War' Movie News: Chris Evans Reveals He Almost Refused Donning Captain America's Suit Because of Fear
It's just a matter of days before actor Chris Evans returns to the big screen via Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War." With how his previous portrayal of the character in standalone movies and "Avengers" was received by the public, it is hard to imagine Marvel Cinematic Universe sans his presence. In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel's show, though, Evans revealed that the role could have almost been breathed to life by a different actor as he initially hesitated donning Captain America's suit.
"I was scared. Because, at first, it was a nine-picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry. Doing movies one at a time, if all of a sudden you decide you don't want to do them anymore, you're afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate. When you have a giant contract, if all of a sudden you're not responding well, too bad, you gotta suit up again. That was scary," Evans said in the interview.
However, despite the initial hesitations, Evans was finally talked into accepting the role after a consultation with his friends and family. It was then when it dawned on him that, all the while, his reasons for turning back on the role were rooted on fear. Having come to that realization, he made sure from then on that he would push himself into something that scares him, and the rest became history.
"It just started to make sense that I was saying no out of fear. You can't be doing something because you're scared," he said.
"Captain America: Civil War" is the third "Captain America" movie of Evans. While it is true that this upcoming movie offering from Marvel is an ensemble of other Marvel superheroes, including Iron Man of Robert Downey, Jr., the title of the movie is enough to say that the spotlight is on the character that Evans initially turned down.
Evans is also set to reprise the role in other upcoming Marvel movies "Avengers: Infinity War" parts one and two, which are slated for a May 2018 and May 2019 release.
"Captain America: Civil War" hits the U.S. theaters on May 9.
