'Captain America: Civil War' Spoilers: Directors Explain Black Panther, Spider-Man's Allegiances In 'Civil War'
By now, Marvel fans know that central to the conflict in "Civil War" is the Sokovia Accords, a set of documents that allows for the regulation of the deployment of individuals with superpowers, including the Avengers. The pretext for the Accords is the Battle of Sokovia, in which the Avengers defeated Ultron and put a stop to his plan of using the city of Novi Grad to bring about global extinction. But though Ultron was stopped and his plan was foiled, the battle destroyed the city and caused the deaths of many.
Given this background, how does the upcoming film explain the sides picked by Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), neither of whom were in the Battle of Sovokia?
"They don't fall neatly into either side," director Anthony Russo told the press at a recent press tour in China, Comic Book Resources reports. "For emotional reasons like Tony [Stark] and Cap do," his brother and co-director, Joe, added.
According to the Russos, who helmed "Civil War" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and are set to direct the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War," Spider-Man and Black Panther enter the picture after the Avengers have already picked sides in the war.
"[Spider-Man] doesn't have a huge investment politically, but he develops a very personal relationship as to why he picks a side," Anthony revealed. "I won't talk about the personal relationship he develops, but it is very interesting. One of the most special parts of the movie," he added.
Meanwhile, Black Panther, who is reportedly one of the Russos favorite characters in "Civil War," will have his own side in the movie, the directors said. "He's not aligned with either side and he has his own road fork that's very central to the plot of the film," Anthony explained. "Like, he's very invested emotionally, but it doesn't fall into clean sides," he disclosed.
Apart from Holland and Boseman, "Civil War" also stars Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Don Cheadle (War Machine), and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man).
"Captain America: Civil War" hits theaters on May 6.
