Carolina Panthers Roster News, Rumors: Josh Norman Wants a Huge Contract
It's no longer a surprise in the NFL when the best players ask for money that's borderline offensive, and for Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman, the belief in himself as one of the best in the league is more than enough reason to demand a $16 million deal.
He worked himself up the ladder last season, showing everyone how improved he was compared to what he was as a player the previous year. CBS Sports meanwhile believes that he no longer is just one of the best cornerbacks in the league but is already one of the best defensive players in the game.
The former fifth round pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Panthers surely has gone a long way since his rookie year. He hasn't played for any other team since turning pro, but there's a good chance he finally will be leaving Carolina. The 28-year old is still yet to sign the franchise tag the Panthers placed on him earlier this month, even though many football observers thought that the $14 million guaranteed money for 2016 should have been more than enough. Apparently, the reason why he hasn't even contemplated on signing it is because he's asking for $16 million.
Last year was Norman's coming out party, seeing himself as a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro Selection. He managed to produce 56 tackles, four interceptions, and three forced fumbles to lead his team. Although the money involved in the franchise tag is already a huge one, the most obvious downside is that it is only good for a year. However, the team and Norman still has until July to negotiate a long-term contract, although there seems to be no indication whatsoever that Norman in giving in.
But in the event that the Panthers grant his request, he'll become the most expensive cornerback in the league heading into the new season.
