Cheney Mason's Wife Unplugged Phone Because of Numerous Threats
With public unrest still at a high over the Casey Anthony verdict, those involved in helping free the 25-year-old are apparently paying the cost, including outspoken defense attorney Cheney Mason.
Mason’s wife, Shirley, called 911 on Tuesday, tired of the numerous threatening phone calls her family has received over the past few days. She even had to unplug her telephone at one point in order to get any sleep, reported Central Florida News 13.
Callers have been phoning in their outrage over the not guilty verdict to the couple’s Longwood home after someone publicly posted their number and address on Facebook.
“I’m just getting a lot of threatening phone calls at my home, and I really am trying to get the telephone company to cooperate with a drop trace on my line, and they don’t want to do that,” she told a 911 dispatcher, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Shirley is in fear for her family’s safety and is asking the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office to react to the harassment.
Some statements made to the Mason’s include: “She (Anthony) can run, but she can’t hide”; “Your scumbag husband and (Jose) Baez better sleep with one eye open”; “How could you do that to a child killer”; and “I hope baby Caylee haunts you in your sleep.”
The phone calls, Shirley believes, are coming from several different sources. She has been keeping a record of all of the messages.
Several of the calls are likely to have been fueled by Cheney’s behavior and attitude post-verdict. He has publicly denounced the media and other lawyers for their coverage over the trial and was even seen giving one reporter the middle finger during a celebratory party after the verdict was reached.
Cheney isn’t the only target of the public’s outrage however. Lead defense attorney Jose Baez has also been threatened numerous times, as well as the 12-member jury who declared Anthony not guilty of manslaughter, child abuse, and murder.
In fear of their well-being, Judge Belvin Perry kept juror names a secret and decided not to release the names to the public.
Only one juror, Jennifer Ford, revealed herself and publicly spoke out about the decision, causing a negative association to others with the same name.
And recently one woman from Oklahoma was attacked and rear-ended for looking like Anthony as well, though she has no relation to her.
It appears as if those involved, indirectly or directly, in the Casey Anthony case is unlikely to get rest anytime soon, especially after Anthony was released from prison on Sunday.
Shirley shared that some callers have been accusing the couple of hiding Anthony in their Longwood home. Cheney told CBS recently that Anthony wanted to become a lawyer and work in his office, raising suspicions of her whereabouts.
Wherever Anthony is or isn’t, her lawyers and those supporting her just want her to be safe, though it might be at their very own expense.
