Wakefield Cast: Jennifer Garner Set Joins Bryan Cranston In New Drama Film

"Dallas Buyers Club" actress Jennifer Garner will star opposite "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston in the drama film "Wakefield," Variety reports.

Garner, who starred in such films as "Elektra" (2005) and "13 Going on 30" (2004), will play the role of Cranston's wife in the film. Robin Swicord will direct and pen the script.

The film is based on a short story of the name same about a man who suddenly leaves his wife and disappears for an extended period of time. It was written by the American author E. L. Doctorow and is a retelling of another story, also called "Wakefield," by the Dark Romantic novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Production is underway in Los Angeles.

In an interview on "The Howard Stern Radio Show" in November, Cranston detailed that he will be playing the role of a married Manhattan lawyer who one day has a nervous breakdown and ends up hiding in his home's attic for several months. He comes down at night to rummage through the trash bins for food and witnesses how his family members quickly learn to live their lives without him. The actor also said that somewhere in the movie, his character will have a romantic entanglement with a younger woman.

"We joyfully supported Bryan on his way to the Tony stage with 'All the Way,' and we are looking forward to joining him on this cinematic journey with 'Wakefield,'" said Wendy Federman and Carl Moellenberg, Broadway theatical producers who are also involved in the movie.

Together, the two Broadway producers have won 11 Tony awards for Broadway productions including "War Horse," "Hair," and "Death of a Salesman." In 2014, they produced the Broadway hit "All The Way." Cranston was a part of that production and played the role of Lyndon B. Johnson. His performance earned him a Tony.

Through their Mockingbird Pictures banner, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn, who are also producing the movie, have produced "Albert Nobbs," which earned three Academy Award nominations, "Last Days in the Desert," and "The Sweet Life."

Swicord also wrote the screenplays for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Memoirs of a Geisha." She directed and penned the script for "The Jane Austen Book Club."
