Cat Found After Three Years, Reunited With Owner

McGee the cat has been found after missing for just over three years. Owner Charlene Lanigan said that while she had searched for him for over a year, she never had any luck until he mysteriously reappeared.

"I searched in vain for that cat," Lanigan told 1010 WINS. "I put ads in every paper; I put ads on Craigslist; there's a lost cat website I went on… and nothing. Nobody ever called."

McGee lived with Lanigan in East Islip, New York and somehow wandered off without anyone noticing. After a few days, Lanigan began her frantic search for the 5-year-old cat. It wasn't until after Superstorm Sandy that McGee reappeared in another East Islip home.

Bobby Boyle found the cat and began looking to see if he was, in fact, missing. He discovered dozens of flyers and notices asking for help finding McGee, and so he took the cat to the local shelter. McGee was scanned for a microchip, which holds important information inside the animal's skin, and Lanigan's address immediately popped up.

"My body went numb," she told WINS. "Bobby returned him to the shelter three years to the day that he went missing. It was just amazing, absolutely amazing. He came in the house like he never left."

Of course, there have been some changes since McGee's been gone. Lanigan now has another cat named Oliver, whom McGee has been working to get used to.

McGee's adventure, though, was only one-fifth as long as that of German cat Poldi, who spent 16 years in the forests of Munich before being reunited with his owner. The cat went missing in 1996 after taking a stroll outside; when he did not return, owner Monika Moser began searching for him, with no success.

Then, in April 2012, Killian Schoettel spotted Poldi in the forest and, feeling sorry for the animal, took it to his home.

"My son immediately noticed that the animal was quite old," his father told Metro news. "He felt sorry for it because it no longer had any front teeth. We fed him for a few days and discovered that he was tattooed, so we took him to the animal sanctuary over the weekend."

The sanctuary was able to match the identification number with Moser's address and reunite the two.

"She really didn't think she would see the cat again after such a long time," shelter spokeswoman Eveline Kosenbach told Agence Fance-Presse.
