'A step forward' or 'contradictory'? Catholic reactions to approval of blessings for LGBT couples
Cardinal Blase Cupich
Cardinal Blase Cupich, the leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, seen as one of the more liberal leaders in the Catholic Church, reacted to "Fiducia Supplicans" in a statement published Dec. 18.
"Here, in the Archdiocese of Chicago, we welcome this declaration, which will help many more in our community feel the closeness and compassion of God," he wrote.
Cupich described the document as "a step forward, and in keeping not only with Pope Francis's desire to accompany people pastorally but Jesus's desire to be present to all people who desire grace and support."
