Whitney Houston Died of 'Drugs and Hanging Out,' Says Celine Dion
Celine Dion seems certain that Whitney Houston died because of drug abuse, despite no toxicology report being released.
The Canadian music artist called in to "Good Morning America" Monday to offer her thoughts on the late singer. Hosts might have expected a somber tribute to a fellow chart-topping songstress, but what Dion gave was her judgment on what possibly could have killed Houston instead.
"Whitney has been an amazing inspiration for me," Dion told host Robin Roberts. "It's just really unfortunate that drugs, bad people or bad influence took over. It took over her dreams. It took over her love and motherhood."
The "bad people or bad influence" Dion spoke over could be a veiled reference to New Edition singer Bobby Brown, who was previously married to Ms. Houston. In an infamous 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer, both Brown and Houston admitted to illegal drug use.
Dion continued talking about Houston, comparing her to other stars whose lives had been ruined by drugs.
"When you think about Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse, to get into drugs like that, for whatever reason. Is it because of the stress and bad influence? What happens when you have everything?" the singer questioned.
"That's why I'm scared of show business, of drugs and hanging out. That's why I don't go to parties!" she added.
Dion's comment may incite criticism, especially because there is no definitive cause of death announced for Houston.
The unfortunate incident is still being called a "normal death," according to Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills Police Department.
"We have concluded our portion of investigation at the hotel," the officer told The Wall Street Journal. "Right now it's a coroner's case."
The coroner's work, along with a complete toxicology workup, could take anywhere from two to three weeks, even though the autopsy has already been completed, according to reports.
There was previous speculation that Houston had drowned, but that theory was later debunked when the coroner told family insiders that there was not enough water present in the singer's lungs to kill her.
A funeral will be held soon in New Jersey, where Houston was originally from.
