"Chasing Life" Season 2 Spoilers, Plot News: What Comes Next After A Shocking Death?
The drama series on ABC, "Chasing Life," is on its second season run at the network and recently, viewers got the biggest shock of their lives when one of the show's main characters met a shocking death. According to a report in Variety, the August 17 episode of the show featured the death of Leo Hendrie (played by Scott Michael Foster), the husband of the show's lead character, April Lauren Carver (played by Italia Ricci). Leo, like April, was also suffering from cancer.
The Variety report featured an interview with the show's executive producer who defended the show's decision to "kill off" Leo. Executive Producer Patrick Sean Smith first said that he was happy "to have an audience react so strongly and loudly" about what happened in the show, and that it was a "good thing."
Smith also said that for the show and its story to move forward, Leo's death was "necessary" especially for the "development of April's character." Given that the show was dealing with something as real as cancer, Smith mentioned that death was something they considered as a way of ending what he called "a big and epic relationship." Plus the fact that something this big and strong happening to April will really move the story along.
In the report, Smith was also asked whether Leo's character will make recurring appearances during the rest of the season. He said that the August 24 episode was Leo's last appearance on the show and none after that. April's character, on the other hand, will continue to deal with life without Leo. Smith said, "We try to keep the show as visceral and emotional as possible so that's really the journey that she's embarking on now toward the end of the season: life without Leo. Leo had been a crutch for April for so long, and to understand how she's dealing with the clinical trials working or not working and to take care of her health on her own seemed like the biggest challenge for April. He's forever going to be a part of her life and it's something she's going to be dealing with hopefully for seasons to come."
In terms of what's next for the rest of the season, Smith mentioned that with Leo gone, April will somehow turn to the other character in the show with whom she had a strong relationship with: Dominic. He however said that they will not end up together as a couple by the end of the season, but that "he remains a person that's important to her."
The other character that April will "connect with" emotionally as she deals with the loss of Leo in the second season is her mother, Sara (played by Mary Page Keller), who is also a widow.
